Daylight Saving Time (DST) change and resources

Change in Daylight Saving Time

Old DST start date:
First Sunday of April (April 1, 2007)

New DST start date:
Second Sunday of March (March 11, 2007)

Old DST end date:
Last Sunday of October (October 28, 2007)

New DST end date:
First Sunday of November (November 4, 2007)

Some computer operating systems and software applications do not have the ability to automatically detect the change in DST and will require corrective patches. Applications and systems that are not updated to accommodate the change in DST will operate one hour behind during the period of March 11 to April 1.

Entourage 2004 users will need to apply Microsoft Office 2004 Update 11.3.3

The change in DST could have a negative impact on any time-based system (including PDAs) or application. It is suggested that campus organizations review and test hardware and software systems that have time dependencies and patch them as necessary. The new DST law includes provisions which allow it to be rolled back to the old schedule in subsequent years, so it is suggested that any technical changes implemented this year should be reversible.

Suggested Actions to Pass on to Users

  • Include the correct meeting time in the subject line of any calendar entries
that fall in the extended DST periods
  • Verify the correct meeting times with meeting organizers
  • Do not try to manually correct the times of existing meetings that occur
    during extended DST periods
  • If one of the application patches is applied, test several meeting times that
would fall into the affected time to ensure they’re correct
