In order to determine how to proceed after the October 2007 expiration of UCLA’s current Sophos agreement, efforts were undertaken to review competing products and determine Sophos’ effectiveness.

Some of the leading anti-virus products were reviewed, but none of the vendors were willing to partner with us and offer agreement terms that would meet the campus’ needs.

In order to determine whether or not Sophos was fulfilling the campus’ anti-virus software needs, a campus-wide survey was conducted. Over 72% of those who responded to the survey indicated that Sophos was effectively fulfilling their anti-virus needs.

Based upon this data, as well as the campus’ current installed base of Sophos, UCLA’s Applied Security Task Force and IT Security Director recommended undertaking negotiations to renew the current Sophos agreement.

Subsequent negotiations resulted in favorable terms, including:
—Unlimited gateway, server and desktop coverage for Sophos Anti-Virus Interface, PureMessage for Windows/Exchange AV, and Sophos Anti-Virus
-
-Home use for faculty, staff and full-time students
—-Two day on-site training services (to be scheduled)

Based upon the information above, the UCLA Common Systems Group endorsed renewing the current campus-wide Sophos agreement through October 2012. The renewal agreement has been completed.

As a reminder, Sophos is available to UCLA departments, faculty, staff and students for work and home use at no cost. To access the products available under this agreement please go to http://www.bol.ucla.edu/software/sophos/.>

We would like your input regarding how best to apply the on-site training component of the agreement. Please email me at trapper@ats.ucla.edu with suggested topics for training, requests for one-on-one consulting for your organization and other suggestions for how best to apply the on-site services.

Thank you.
