Moodle Confusions

It seems like some things in Moodle aren’t always intuitive. At least to me. This is a list of commands or functions that aren’t where I expected them to be, or that were called by an unexpected name. Hopefully this will help me, and others, find them more easily in the future. Note, unless mentione otherwise, these refer to Moodle 1.7 or higher.

  • Adding or Removing Students to a site
    1. Go to site where the student should be added
    2. Administration
    3. Assign Roles
    4. Click on Student
    5. Select from list of all students on right, and click on left arrow key to add them to the class
    6. You can also search for a user using the search tool beneath the list of users
    7. To remove people from your site, selecting their name on the left side and click on right arrow key to remove them from the class

This can be done with other roles as well, though you can only add roles lower than your own.

  • Approving Course Requests – You would think it would be Site Admin / Courses / Course Requests, but it isn’t. That’s for making a request. Seems like they should allow approving there too.
    1. Site Administration
    2. Courses
    3. Add/edit Courses
    4. Click on button Courses Pending Approval

Of course this won’t work if you don’t have the correct privileges.

  • Subscribing to a forum on Moodle.org – Once you have a login for Moodle.org, the only immediate option for forum subscription is to subscribe to all forums (see the upper righthand corner in the list of forums). If you want to subscribe to an individual forum:
    1. Forums
    2. Scroll to the one of interest and open it.
    3. Click a post and Reply.
    4. Agree to enrol(l) and then you’re subscribed.

Of course this won’t work if you don’t have the correct privileges.
